Azerbaijan, located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for tourism, business, education and employment. The country offers different visa and immigration options depending on the purpose of travel, nationality and individual circumstances.
For travellers who are eligible, Azerbaijan’s official ASAN Visa system provides an electronic visa application process. Applicants should always check their eligibility and the latest requirements before submitting an application.
If you are planning to visit Azerbaijan for tourism, sightseeing, holidays or visiting family and friends, an appropriate visitor visa may be required depending on your nationality.
Eligible travellers can apply through the official ASAN Visa system. The official portal states that a standard e-visa application should generally be submitted at least 3 working days before arrival, while an urgent e-visa can be applied for at least 3 hours before arrival, subject to the applicable conditions.
The e-visa is an initial document permitting entry and travel in Azerbaijan, but final entry remains subject to the country’s immigration and border requirements.
The Azerbaijan e-visa system allows eligible travellers to complete the application process online. The official ASAN Visa website provides options to submit a new application, check visa status and review the conditions for electronic visas.
Applicants should make sure that the passport or travel document used for the e-visa application is the same document they will use for travel. If the travel document details do not match, the e-visa may be considered invalid.
People travelling to Azerbaijan for employment need to follow different requirements from tourists.
An important point is that an e-visa does not authorize paid employment in Azerbaijan. Foreign nationals intending to undertake paid work generally need the appropriate labour/work visa arrangements. If a foreigner intends both to reside temporarily and undertake paid employment, a work permit and temporary residence permit may also be required under Azerbaijan’s immigration rules.
The State Migration Service explains that employers or eligible entities can apply for a work permit for a foreign worker even while the worker is outside Azerbaijan.
Students planning to study in Azerbaijan should check the requirements applicable to their education program and nationality before travelling.
Depending on the length and nature of the stay, students may need appropriate immigration permission or residence arrangements. Applicants should obtain the required admission and educational documents and follow the applicable immigration procedure.
Foreign nationals who intend to stay in Azerbaijan temporarily may need a temporary residence permit when they meet an eligible legal basis.
The State Migration Service states that temporary residence permits can be issued on various grounds, including certain family relationships, investment, property ownership, highly qualified professional status and other circumstances established under Azerbaijani law.
Temporary residence permits are issued for periods determined under the applicable rules, and extensions may be possible where the relevant legal basis continues to exist.
Depending on the visa or immigration category, applicants may need documents such as:
The exact requirements depend on the visa category and applicant’s circumstances.
A typical visa application may involve:
For e-visas, the official ASAN Visa system provides online application and status-checking facilities.
